* Alcohol  Involved crash means one of the parties involved
  in a crash had consumed alcohol, not necessarily the person killed.


Findings:
Traffic Fatality Deaths have demonstrated a dramatic increase since 1998 in numbers and population rate.
The increase in traffic fatalities since 1998 is mostly the result of an increase in alcohol fatalities.
The number of deaths went down slightly in 2004. 

 


+ Since the low number of fatal traffic deaths in 1998, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of fatalities. The rate has followed a similar if less dramatic trend..

+ In 2004, the number of fatalities dropped for the first time in 6 years. Table for Chart

+ Adjusted for population, the rate of deaths went down by almost 50% between 1991-1998.  Table for Chart

+ The number of alcohol related fatalities went up slightly in 2004.

+ Alcohol related fatalities went down by nearly 50% between 2001 and 1998.  Since then it has gone up dramatically again.

+ The percent of all fatalities that involve alcohol has increased since the low in 1997, including a 2% increase between 2003 and 2004.

+ Non-Alcohol related traffic deaths have not increased.

+ When observed as rates,  the alcohol involved crashes have a slightly smaller increase after 1998 as compared to actual numbers.  This is due to the increase of population in California during this time.
