* Alcohol  Involved crash means one of the parties  involved  in a crash had consumed alcohol, not necessarily the person killed.

+ The 3401 traffic deaths in 2008 is the lowest number of traffic deaths since before 1991 .
Non-Alcohol Driver Deaths dropped by 15%.
Non-Alcohol Passenger Deaths dropped by 32%.
Non-Alcohol Pedestrian Deaths dropped by 9%.

+ The Number of all fatalities that  involve alcohol is at the lowest since 2002.
+ However, alcohol related deaths have not dropped as fast as non-alcohol related deaths with the result that there has been a steady increase of alcohol involvement  traffic deaths since 1997, and alcohol related deaths now stands at 40% of deaths.
*   Since 1991, 71,941 people have died in California through traffic crashes. 



+ The 3401 traffic deaths in 2008 is the lowest number of traffic deaths since before 1991.
+ The 3401 traffic deaths in 2008 is a decrease of about 15% from 2007.  It is likely that much of this drop is due to higher gas prices and lower miles traveled.

+ 2007 is the third year in a row there has been a decrease.






+ The 1355 alcohol  traffic deaths in 2008 is a decrease of about 9% from 2007.  It is likely that much of this drop is due to higher gas prices and lower miles traveled.
Notice the drop in alcohol related deaths is lower than all deaths.

+ 2008 is the second year in a row there has been a decrease in the number alcohol related.










+ The percent of all fatalities that  involve alcohol is at the highest level since 1992.

+ There has been a steady increase of alcohol involved traffic deaths since 1997.  The percent of alcohol involvement is now 10% higher than 1997.



+ Overall for California for non-alcohol deaths there was a 17% drop between 2007 and 2008.
+ The drop in alcohol related deaths was 9%.

+ For Drivers there has been a  dramatic drop in 2008 in fatalities for both alcohol involved and non-alcohol involved traffic deaths, although similar to the state averages/
+ The drop in non-alcohol involved drivers was twice that of alcohol involved, but again similar to state averages.
