Traffic Fatality Trends  and DUI Arrests
in California  Years 1991-2006


Findings:
Since 1998 there has been a 32% increase in Alcohol Related Traffic Deaths.

Since 1998 there has been a slow decrease in the number of Drinking Under the Influence (DUI) arrests.


In 1998 there were 176 DUI Arrests Per Alcohol Death in 2005 there were only 115 DUI Arrests Per Alcohol Death.

Overall, since 1998, there has been a 35% drop in Alcohol Arrests Per Traffic Alcohol Death

+ In 2005, there were 180,288 DUI arrests, or 494 DUI arrests a day.

+ In 2005, there were 1574 alcohol related deaths

The Number of DUI arrests in the state have gone down nearly every year since 1991, even after the number of alcohol related fatalities started to go up 1998.

+ In 1998 there were 176 DUI Arrests Per Alcohol Death in 2005 there were only 115 DUI Arrests Per Alcohol Death.

+ Overall, since 1998, there has been a 35% drop in Alcohol Arrests Per Traffic Alcohol Death

+ The number of traffic deaths for 2006 in California is 4197.

+ The 4197 traffic deaths in 2006 is an decrease of about 2.5% from 2005.

+ 2006 is however the third highest  number of deaths  in California since 1998 began in 1999.

+ In 2006, the number of alcohol related fatalities, 1597, up from the 1574 of 2005,  approximately a 1.5% increase 2005.

+ In 2006, the number of non-alcohol related fatalities,2600, was down from the 2730 of 2005,  approximately a 5% decrease from 2005.

+ The number of alcohol related fatalities has gone up every year since 1998. 

+ Since 1998 there has been a 33% percent increase in the number of alcohol related fatalities.  In the same period of time, non-alcohol related fatalities have increased 9%

+ The percent of all fatalities that  involve alcohol has increased steadily since the low in 1998.

+ The percent of alcohol involved fatalities has not been this high, 38%, since 1993.
